Over-grazing in the Dhofar Mountain Region: A Major Sustainability Challenge

Abstract Pastoral systems are over-utilised in many countries due to population growth, land monotony, reconstruction, marketization and climate change. In Oman, particularly the Dhofar Mountains, people concerned about social environmental sustainability of pastoralism because mountain chains, located south have long been regarded as one best agricultural areas country. Overgrazing Mountains a significant increase number domestic livestock poses threat environment. The main objective this study is conduct systematic investigation socioeconomic factors affecting Mountain area how contributes challenges sustainability, with emphasis on overgrazing degradation. A scientific tools, such focus groups questionnaires, being used examine social, economic overgrazing. Results show that expansion residential buildings positive influence degradation natural pastures. One crucial socio-ecological mountains experiencing strategies policies aimed at reducing issued by policy makers residing outside mountains. To address challenge, native community stakeholders must ability solve problems make decisions. local government should invest marketing animal production an experiment locals can replicate.
